Tinubu Dissolves Nnamdi Azikiwe University Governing Council Over Appointment Irregularities

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has taken decisive actions against alleged misconduct in two federal universities. He approved the dissolution of the Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, and the removal of key officials, including the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Bernard Ifeanyi Odoh, and the Registrar, Mrs. Rosemary Ifoema Nwokike. The council, led by Ambassador Greg Ozumba Mbadiwe, was accused of appointing an unqualified vice-chancellor without adhering to due process.

According to a statement by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the Federal Government intervened following reports of a flawed selection process that sparked tensions between the university’s Senate and its council. Tinubu expressed concern over the council's disregard for legal procedures and emphasized adherence to governance standards in university operations.

In a separate development, President Tinubu also approved the removal of Engr. Ohieku Muhammed Salami as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo, Benue State. Salami was accused of illegally suspending the Vice-Chancellor without following due process and ignoring directives from the Federal Ministry of Education to reverse the suspension. He was also reported to have exhibited abusive and threatening behavior towards ministry officials.

The President reiterated the importance of university councils adhering to the laws governing their institutions and warned against actions that disrupt academic and administrative operations. He emphasized his administration's commitment to improving Nigeria’s education standards.
