Lagos State has been selected as the host city for the 2027 Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF), following an announcement by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), in partnership with the African Union and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat. The nomination marks a historic first for Nigeria and West Africa.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, reacting to the development in Algiers on Friday, said Lagos’ selection underscores Nigeria’s central role in Africa’s economic integration and the state’s reputation as a commercial powerhouse.

“We are very excited about this choice, though not surprised. It is a reflection of our resilience, strength, and commitment to the Greater Lagos journey through our T.H.E.M.E.S Plus Agenda,” the governor said. “Hosting the IATF will boost our goal of positioning Lagos as a global financial hub.”

Sanwo-Olu noted that Lagos has continued to attract global attention through international events, including the recently concluded GITEX Nigeria tech expo and the forthcoming E1 electric boat race, the first of its kind in Africa. He added that the trade fair aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which continues to strengthen Nigeria’s economic outlook.

Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and Investment, Folashade Kaosarat Bada-Ambrose, described the announcement as a strategic win for Nigeria and West Africa. She said hosting the continent’s largest trade and investment gathering will position Lagos at the forefront of intra-African trade and foster collaboration, innovation, and economic growth.

The 2027 fair is expected to draw over 1,600 exhibitors, 35,000 visitors, and generate billions of dollars in trade and investment deals. With a population of more than 23 million, a strategic coastal location, and a diversified economy, Lagos offers a strong platform for deepening AfCFTA objectives.

Preparations for the event will be carried out in partnership with the Federal Government, Afreximbank, the African Union, and the AfCFTA Secretariat, with priorities placed on infrastructure, logistics, security, and hospitality.

Mrs. Bada-Ambrose also led Lagos’ first SME delegation to the ongoing 2025 IATF in Algiers, where she delivered a keynote at the SME Pavilion and represented Nigeria in trade exhibitions.

The Lagos State Government said the hosting rights represent Africa’s confidence in Nigeria’s leadership and Lagos’ readiness to deliver a world-class trade fair.
