Russia has ordered a British diplomat to leave the country after accusing him of engaging in intelligence activities that threaten national security, according to its federal security agency.
The official, identified as Albertus Gerhardus Janse Van Rensburg, had his diplomatic accreditation revoked and was given a two-week deadline to exit Russia. Authorities claimed his actions were incompatible with his diplomatic status.
The Russian Foreign Ministry also summoned the United Kingdom’s top envoy in Moscow to protest the incident and cautioned London against taking retaliatory measures.
The British embassy has not issued an immediate response to the expulsion.
Relations between both countries remain strained, largely due to ongoing tensions linked to the war in Ukraine and longstanding accusations of espionage on both sides.
Over the years, Moscow and London have repeatedly expelled each other’s diplomats in similar disputes, often triggering reciprocal actions.
High-profile cases, including past poisoning incidents involving former Russian agents in the UK, have further deepened mistrust between the two nations.
