The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has been conferred with the distinguished title “Emperor of Yoruba Kings in Africa and the Diaspora,” acknowledging his role in promoting Yoruba culture and unity across the globe.

The honour was presented at the Ooni’s palace in Ile-Ife by Yoruba traditional rulers affiliated with the Apapo Oba Yoruba in Africa and the Diaspora (AOYAD) from the Republic of Benin. The event marked a significant milestone in the recognition of Yoruba leadership beyond national borders.

AOYAD President, Adehoumi Kiffouli, who also rules Illaso Kingdom in Benin, said the title celebrates the Ooni’s commitment to fostering cultural identity, heritage preservation, and the unity of Yoruba people worldwide.

According to Kiffouli, the recognition underscores the Ooni’s role as a unifying figure who bridges traditional institutions and communities across Africa and the diaspora, reinforcing the spiritual and historical significance of Yoruba leadership.

During the ceremony, Oba Ogunwusi received the honour with gratitude, describing it as a collective achievement for the Yoruba people rather than a personal accolade. He stressed that the award strengthens ongoing initiatives to connect Yoruba descendants globally.

The Ooni emphasized the need for cooperation among Yoruba traditional rulers and communities to ensure the preservation of cultural values and shared traditions. He highlighted unity as the most potent tool for sustaining the Yoruba heritage.

Oba Ogunwusi also prayed for continued peace, prosperity, and cultural revival within Yoruba communities across the continent and the diaspora, urging leaders to collaborate in promoting harmony and socio-economic development.

The conferment reflects a growing trend of formal recognition of African traditional institutions’ influence internationally, particularly in uniting diaspora communities around shared cultural and historical identities.
