The New York City Police Department has begun a search for a gunman suspected of killing a 30-year-old Nigerian man, Sheriff Shittu, during a shooting at a nightclub in Brooklyn.

Investigators say the motive for the shooting remains unclear as detectives work to determine what led to the dispute. The suspect was reportedly last seen wearing a black jacket and white trousers before fleeing the scene. No arrests have been made.

According to police, Shittu was shot in the head following an altercation with another patron inside the venue. He was rushed to Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

Data from the precinct indicates the killing marks the first fatal shooting recorded in the area this year

Family members of the deceased have called for justice, describing him as a compassionate individual with ambitions in the fashion industry. Shittu and his brother had attended a birthday celebration at the club before the confrontation escalated.

His younger brother questioned how a firearm was brought into the premises, alleging that the suspect was being escorted out when he suddenly opened fire.

The tragedy comes days after another Nigerian national, Khaleed Oladipo, a student of De Montfort University, was fatally stabbed in Leicester while returning home from campus.

Police in New York have urged anyone with information about the Brooklyn shooting to come forward as the investigation continues.
