Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi has added another honour to his name—not for a goal, but for giving back.

Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi has earned a major honour away from the scoreboard—winning the Beyond the Pitch Award at the 2026 Best of Africa Awards for his philanthropy and contributions to football development in Nigeria.
The Coventry City forward was recognised for supporting grassroots football, nurturing young talents and creating opportunities for aspiring players back home. The award, presented in partnership with the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA), celebrates players who make a meaningful impact beyond their performances on the field.
For Nigerians in the diaspora, Awoniyi’s win is a proud reminder of footballers using their platforms to stay connected to home and invest in the next generation.
The striker attended the ceremony with his wife, Taiwo, his brother Victor Awoniyi, other family members, friends and members of his team. England international Michelle Agyemang won the women’s category of the same award.
Established in 2011, the Best of Africa Awards celebrates people of African heritage across sport, entertainment, business and other sectors, with particular emphasis on leadership, philanthropy and community impact.
Awoniyi joins a growing list of African football figures recognised by the awards. Nigerian international Alex Iwobi received the Community Action Award in 2018, while Mohamed Salah won Player of the Year that same year. Former Ivory Coast captain Yaya Touré and Kenyan international Victor Wanyama have also been honoured.
His latest recognition highlights the growing importance of footballers giving back to their communities and inspiring the next generation. From grassroots pitches in Nigeria to a major African achievement award, Awoniyi is proving that some of the most important victories happen far away from the pitch.
