A 46-year-old Nigerian man was killed in a shooting at Yorkdale GO Bus Terminal on Sunday evening, sending shockwaves through the local community.

Police reports indicate that both the victim and the suspect boarded a bus at the terminal around 7 p.m. The suspect reportedly shot the man before fleeing on foot. Responding officers found the victim with a critical gunshot wound and attempted life-saving measures, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities confirmed that the victim was Osemwengie Irorere, a Nigerian national. Toronto police swiftly tracked down the suspect, identified as 40-year-old Tyrel Gibson, who was arrested shortly after and charged with first-degree murder.

The firearm allegedly used in the incident was recovered at the scene. Gibson appeared before the Toronto Regional Bail Centre the following day, where the case was formally presented in court.

Police are urging witnesses or anyone with information about the shooting to come forward as investigations continue. No motive has been officially confirmed, though officers are exploring all leads.

The Nigerian community in Toronto has expressed deep concern over the safety of immigrants, calling for heightened security at public transport hubs. Local community leaders said the incident underscores the need for vigilance and support for victims of violent crimes.

Toronto officials have assured the public that enhanced patrols will be implemented at transit terminals to prevent similar incidents in the future. The city’s homicide unit remains actively involved in the ongoing investigation.

Authorities emphasized that justice will be pursued through the Canadian legal system, and they encouraged community members to remain calm while cooperating with law enforcement.
