Thai authorities have arrested a Nigerian man identified as Obi over his alleged involvement in a transnational drug trafficking and romance scam syndicate operating across Thailand.
According to local police, the suspect was apprehended during a coordinated operation in Bangkok’s Suan Luang district alongside two Thai women believed to be linked to the network. The arrests reportedly led to the seizure of more than 65 kilograms of heroin with an estimated street value of about $6.5 million.
Police disclosed that a large portion of the heroin was recovered from the Nigerian suspect, while additional quantities were found with one of the Thai women arrested separately in the city.
Officials further alleged that the criminal group recruited Thai women through online romance scams before involving them in drug delivery activities. The women were reportedly paid commissions for each successful transaction.
Authorities also stated that the suspects operated independently and were allegedly unaware of one another’s identities within the wider network.
The latest arrest comes amid an ongoing crackdown by Thai law enforcement on international fraud and narcotics syndicates involving foreign nationals. Weeks earlier, several Nigerians and a Thai accomplice were reportedly detained in Pattaya over alleged cyber fraud and money laundering activities.
