Nigeria and the Republic of Türkiye have entered into a new partnership aimed at expanding cooperation in the mining and energy sectors following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding during the Istanbul Natural Resources Summit.

The agreement, signed by Nigeria’s Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, and Türkiye’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar, is expected to strengthen collaboration in mineral exploration, technical development, and investment opportunities between both countries.

The minister explained that the Federal Government has continued to introduce policies designed to attract long-term foreign investment while improving transparency and operational standards within the industry. According to him, reforms implemented in recent years have created a more stable environment for investors interested in Nigeria’s mineral resources.

Alake also stated that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains committed to strengthening international partnerships capable of driving growth in the mining and energy industries.

He further highlighted the government’s campaign against illegal mining activities across the country, revealing that security operations targeting unlawful operators have intensified. He disclosed that several illegal mining sites had been recovered while numerous suspects, including foreign nationals, were undergoing prosecution.

On his part, Bayraktar described the agreement as an important step toward stronger economic ties between Nigeria and Türkiye. He said Turkish investors and industrial companies are increasingly interested in opportunities within Nigeria’s mining, hydrocarbons, and energy sectors.

The Turkish minister added that Nigeria occupies a strategic position in Africa’s energy landscape and expressed optimism that both countries would achieve mutually beneficial outcomes through sustained cooperation.

During discussions at the summit, Alake also stressed the importance of global stability and peaceful international relations in addressing energy security challenges, noting that persistent conflicts around the world continue to threaten sustainable economic and energy development efforts.
