The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has rolled out an enhanced passport tracking system designed to give applicants real-time updates on the status of their applications. The system now provides clearer information on passports that are ready for physical collection and those awaiting courier delivery.

According to the NIS, the upgrade aims to improve efficiency and align the service with global best practices, ensuring applicants are better informed throughout the passport production process.

The update comes in response to public concerns over processing delays, including reports from applicants who experienced extended waiting periods despite completing payments online. The NIS emphasized that delays can sometimes occur due to incomplete applications, mandatory security checks, or technical issues, but confirmed that affected passports have often already been produced and are ready for delivery.

The Service highlighted that more than 1.3 million passports were produced in 2025 alone. It also noted that Nigeria’s passport has recently improved its ranking on the Henley Passport Index, reflecting increased global mobility for its citizens.

NIS assured the public that it remains committed to delivering an effective and transparent passport service, emphasizing that the new tracking system is a step toward reducing waiting times and improving overall user experience.
