Hon. Dr. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), held a high-level meeting with the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service to strengthen support mechanisms for Nigerians living abroad.

The engagement focused on practical reforms to improve customs processes affecting diaspora communities. Central to the discussion was the need to accelerate and simplify the clearance of personal effects and diaspora cargoes entering the country through various ports

Both agencies also examined measures to facilitate diaspora investments, particularly in relation to business imports. The talks underscored the importance of reducing administrative delays that could discourage overseas Nigerians from expanding commercial activities at home.

Another key area of discussion was the need for joint strategies to address bottlenecks affecting the importation of charitable equipment and materials intended for donations. This is especially critical ahead of the July 2026 Diaspora Day medical outreach programme.

Officials emphasised enhanced inter-agency collaboration as a pathway to improving service delivery and ensuring that diaspora contributions are not hindered by procedural challenges. The meeting reaffirmed a shared commitment to safeguarding the welfare and interests of Nigerians in the diaspora.

The renewed cooperation signals a coordinated effort to align customs operations with broader diaspora engagement objectives, reinforcing the government’s pledge to support Nigerians abroad in their economic and humanitarian initiatives.
