The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has celebrated the induction of Abigail Marshall Katung, the Lord Mayor of Leeds, into the Aisha Babangida Nigerian Women’s Hall of Fame, describing it as a proud and historic moment for Nigerians abroad.

In a statement issued by NiDCOM’s Media and Public Relations Unit, Chairman/CEO Abike Dabiri-Erewa lauded the recognition as a powerful reminder of the impact Nigerians in the diaspora continue to make globally.
“Abigail Marshall Katung exemplifies the excellence, resilience, and leadership we promote at NiDCOM,” Dabiri-Erewa said. “Her achievement as the first African-born Lord Mayor of Leeds is not only inspiring but deserving of national honour.”

She emphasized that the honour celebrates not only Katung’s individual success but also the broader contributions of Nigerian women in the diaspora, who continue to make transformative impacts while staying connected to their homeland.
“This recognition shows that no matter how far our people go, Nigeria remembers and celebrates them,” she added. “We hope this inspires even more Nigerians abroad to stay engaged, give back, and help build the Nigeria of our dreams.”
In her response, Katung expressed deep appreciation for the honour, calling it a meaningful connection to her roots.
“It is humbling to be recognised in this way,” she said. “I thank NiDCOM and the Centre for Women Development for shining a light on women of the diaspora who are making a difference.”
The Nigerian Women’s Hall of Fame, located at the Maryam Babangida National Centre for Women Development in Abuja, honours exceptional Nigerian women across the globe for their leadership, service, and enduring legacy.
