Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has commended the Indian diaspora in Malaysia for its strong commitment to preserving culture, language and heritage, ahead of his planned official visit to Kuala Lumpur in early February.
Speaking during his monthly radio programme, Mann Ki Baat, Modi described the Indian community in Malaysia as a deeply rooted population that has lived in the country for generations and considers it home, while maintaining close cultural ties with India.
He highlighted the role of education in sustaining Indian identity abroad, noting that Malaysia has more than 500 Tamil national-type schools where Tamil is taught not only as a language but also used for instruction in other subjects. He added that languages such as Telugu and Punjabi are also actively promoted.
Modi also praised cultural activities organised by the diaspora, pointing to events that showcase Indian traditions through music, dance and fashion. He cited performances of classical dance forms and folk music as evidence of a vibrant and thriving cultural presence.
According to the prime minister, these efforts go beyond cultural preservation and play an important role in strengthening people-to-people relations between India and Malaysia. He described the diaspora as a bridge that connects both countries socially and culturally.
Leaders of Indian community organisations in Malaysia welcomed Modi’s remarks, describing them as a recognition of years of voluntary work aimed at promoting heritage, unity and mutual understanding within Malaysia’s multicultural society.
Modi’s upcoming visit is expected to further deepen bilateral relations between India and Malaysia, with a focus on cultural cooperation, diplomacy and stronger engagement with the Indian diaspora as part of India’s broader outreach to Southeast Asia.
