Libyan security forces have uncovered a mass grave containing 21 bodies of undocumented migrants near the city of Ajdabiya in eastern Libya. The discovery came after an intelligence-led operation conducted by local security agencies in collaboration with humanitarian actors.

Authorities believe the migrants were killed by human traffickers while being held in captivity. Following the discovery, a Libyan national suspected of orchestrating the killings has been arrested.

The operation also led to the rescue of several migrants, including women and children, who were still detained by the trafficking network. Investigators are continuing efforts to identify and rescue other victims reportedly held in similar conditions across the region.

Libya remains a key transit route for migrants from sub-Saharan Africa attempting to reach Europe, but many face abuse, extortion, forced labour, and death at the hands of criminal trafficking syndicates.

Human rights organizations have repeatedly highlighted the dangers faced by migrants in the country, urging Libyan authorities and the international community to strengthen measures against trafficking networks and ensure the protection of vulnerable individuals.

Officials confirmed that investigations into the Ajdabiya killings are ongoing and pledged continued action to dismantle the human trafficking operations responsible.

The discovery underscores the persistent risks for migrants in Libya and the urgent need for coordinated regional and international responses to combat trafficking and safeguard human lives.
