The 9th All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) 2026 culminated in a spectacular grand finale this past Sunday at the Eko Hotels and Suites, positioning Lagos State as the epicenter of Africa’s creative economy. The event served as more than a musical showcase; it was a strategic demonstration of how cultural diplomacy can be leveraged to drive youth empowerment and significant economic growth within the region.

Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, addressed the international audience, describing music as the "heartbeat of the continent’s identity." She noted that the state’s decision to host the event was a deliberate investment in a sector capable of generating thousands of jobs. By providing a platform for the "African Music Business Summit," the government is working to ensure that creativity translates into sustainable financial structures.
The ceremony paid homage to the pioneers of Nigerian music, from the legendary Fela Anikulapo-Kuti to King Sunny Ade, tracing the lineage that led to the current global dominance of Afrobeats. The Commissioner emphasized that the success of contemporary African music on global charts is proof that, with the right institutional support, African cultural products can compete and lead on the world stage.
Beyond the glitz of the awards, the 2026 edition focused heavily on capacity building through the "AFRIMA Music Village" and various industry dialogues. These initiatives were designed to bridge the gap between raw talent and professional longevity. Stakeholders emphasized that for the industry to remain resilient, there must be a seamless collaboration between government policies and private sector investment.

The night concluded with electrifying performances that celebrated the continent's diverse genres, from Jazz to Reggae and Hip-Hop. AFRIMA founder, Mr. Mike Dada, expressed gratitude to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration for its consistent support. The event reinforced the narrative that Lagos is not just a host city, but a partner in projecting African authenticity to a global audience.
