Nigerians living in Canada may soon be able to take the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) without returning to Nigeria, following plans by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to establish an examination centre in Ottawa.

JAMB announced that efforts were underway to set up the proposed centre, with operations expected to begin in 2027.

The board said the initiative is designed to provide greater access to the UTME for eligible Nigerian candidates residing in Canada and other parts of North America.

Under the planned arrangement, candidates in the region would no longer have to make an international trip solely for the purpose of sitting for the examination in Nigeria.

JAMB disclosed the development in a social media post, describing the Ottawa centre as part of efforts to make the examination more accessible to Nigerians living outside the country.

The proposed facility would also give prospective candidates in the diaspora a more convenient route to participate in Nigeria's university admission process.

The board said the initiative would help deepen the relationship between Nigerians abroad and the country's tertiary education system.

If implemented as planned, the Ottawa centre would expand JAMB's ability to administer the UTME beyond Nigeria and make participation easier for eligible candidates across North America.
