Iranian Military Launches Missile Strikes on Kurdish Groups in Iraq

Iran’s military has carried out missile strikes targeting Kurdish opposition groups operating in northern Iraq, according to reports from Iranian state media.

Military authorities in Tehran said three missiles were launched at facilities believed to be used by Kurdish groups opposed to the Iranian government. The strikes reportedly hit headquarters linked to organisations described by Iranian officials as separatist movements.

Footage released by Iranian state broadcaster Press TV allegedly showed explosions at locations associated with the groups. Iranian officials claimed the operation was aimed at preventing cross-border activities they say threaten the country’s security.

The attack comes amid rising regional tensions and speculation about potential international involvement with Kurdish forces. Recent reports in U.S. media suggested that President Donald Trump was considering supplying weapons to Kurdish groups as part of a strategy to pressure Iran’s leadership.

The White House, however, dismissed the reports. Officials said no decision had been taken to arm Kurdish groups in the region.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that President Trump had held discussions with Kurdish leaders regarding issues related to a U.S. military base in northern Iraq.

The Kurdish population, estimated at around 30 million people, is spread across Iraq, Iran, Syria, and Turkey. For decades, Kurdish political movements have advocated for greater autonomy or the creation of an independent state.

Iraq’s Kurdish region gained autonomous status after the 2003 overthrow of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, though tensions between Kurdish groups and neighbouring countries have persisted.
