The Iranian government has come under scrutiny after its embassy in London circulated a message urging Iranians living in the United Kingdom to register support for a controversial national campaign tied to the country’s ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
The message, shared on the embassy’s official communication channels, appealed to Iranian nationals abroad to demonstrate solidarity with their homeland. It framed the initiative as a patriotic duty, encouraging participation in what authorities describe as a “defence of national sovereignty.”
Central to the campaign is an online registration platform reportedly managed by Iran’s foreign ministry. The initiative, widely referred to as a “sacrifice for the homeland” programme, invites supporters to formally declare their commitment to Iran amid rising regional tensions.
Analysts say the move represents an expansion of Tehran’s messaging strategy, extending beyond domestic audiences to target diaspora communities. While officials present the programme as symbolic, concerns have emerged about how the data collected could be used.
The development has drawn a swift response from British authorities. Officials at the UK’s Foreign Office summoned Iran’s ambassador, warning that any messaging perceived as encouraging violence or extremist behaviour would not be tolerated.
Security experts have also raised alarms, suggesting the campaign could serve as a tool for influence operations. Some believe it may help identify individuals who could later be targeted for recruitment, surveillance activities, or ideological mobilisation.
The controversy comes amid heightened security concerns in the UK following recent incidents involving attacks on Jewish-linked locations. While investigations are ongoing, intelligence sources have not ruled out the involvement of foreign-backed networks.
Despite the backlash, representatives of the Iranian embassy maintain that the campaign is purely patriotic in nature. They insist it is intended to foster unity among Iranians worldwide and does not advocate violence or unlawful actions.
The situation underscores growing tensions between Western governments and Iran, particularly over influence efforts abroad and the broader geopolitical conflict shaping the Middle East.
