Prime Minister Narendra Modi has described the Indian diaspora as a vital link between India and the international community, praising overseas Indians for strengthening the country’s global presence while remaining deeply connected to their roots.
In a message marking Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas, observed annually on January 9, the Prime Minister acknowledged the far-reaching impact of Indians living abroad, noting their contributions to economic growth, innovation, culture, and public service in their host countries. He emphasised that the diaspora has played a consistent role in projecting India’s values, traditions, and capabilities on the world stage.
PM Modi also highlighted the government’s sustained efforts to deepen engagement with overseas Indians, stressing that policies and initiatives have been designed to foster closer ties and encourage meaningful participation in India’s development journey. According to him, members of the diaspora act as informal ambassadors, promoting India’s heritage and interests globally.
Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas serves as a platform to recognise the achievements of Non-Resident Indians and Persons of Indian Origin, while also strengthening dialogue between India and its global community. The observance underscores the role of the diaspora in sectors such as business, science, education, culture, and social development.
The Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas Convention, first introduced in 2003, has evolved into a key forum for structured engagement with overseas Indians. Hosted in different parts of the country, the event showcases India’s regional diversity and development while facilitating direct interaction between policymakers and diaspora representatives.
Since 2015, the convention has been held every two years, complemented by thematic programmes in the intervening period.
A major highlight of the celebrations remains the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award, India’s highest honour for overseas Indians and diaspora-led organisations. The award recognises outstanding contributions to enhancing India’s global image, supporting national causes, and advancing the welfare of Indian communities abroad.
