The Indian community in Oman organised a colourful and well-attended reception this week to honour the crew of INSV Kaundinya, following the vessel’s successful arrival in Muscat after a historic sea voyage from India.

The traditional stitched ship, which sailed from Porbandar in Gujarat in late December, reached Oman after spending over two weeks navigating the Arabian Sea. Its arrival marked a significant milestone in efforts to revive and showcase India’s ancient maritime heritage.

Members of the Indian diaspora, alongside diplomats, students and community leaders, gathered at the port to welcome the crew. The atmosphere was celebratory, with attendees describing the moment as deeply symbolic of India’s long-standing seafaring traditions and cultural links with the Gulf region.

Representatives of the Indian Embassy in Muscat praised the crew’s discipline and resilience, noting that the voyage reflects India’s historical trade routes and people-to-people connections with Oman that date back centuries.

Cultural performances formed a central part of the event, as a Gujarati folk dance group entertained guests with traditional routines, highlighting the cultural diversity of India and the strong sense of identity maintained by Indians living abroad.

The crew of INSV Kaundinya interacted with members of the community, sharing insights from their journey and explaining the historical significance of the vessel, which was constructed using age-old shipbuilding techniques without modern materials.

The event also served as a reminder of the enduring diplomatic and cultural ties between India and Oman, with community leaders describing the voyage as a powerful symbol of shared history, cooperation and mutual respect across the Arabian Sea.
