Jamaicans living abroad have been encouraged to take part in the ongoing election process for the Global Jamaica Diaspora Council (GJDC) and the Global Jamaica Diaspora Youth Council (GJDYC), as preparations intensify to select new representatives.

In Canada, the deadline for individuals seeking to contest council positions is Monday, January 19, 2026. The nomination window will close ahead of the publication of the official list of approved candidates, scheduled for January 24.

Voting is expected to conclude on February 20, when four representatives will be confirmed following the final count. Jamaicans residing in Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States have been urged to register and vote before the deadline.

The Global Jamaica Diaspora Council was created to deepen engagement between Jamaicans overseas and the Government of Jamaica, providing a structured platform for dialogue, policy input, and coordinated action.

Recent developments, including the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, have reinforced the need for direct and effective communication between diaspora communities and government institutions, particularly during national emergencies.

Several candidates have already commenced campaigns, outlining plans to strengthen diaspora coordination, expand advocacy efforts, and improve information sharing between Jamaica and its overseas population.

Diaspora members have been reminded that meaningful representation depends on active participation, with online registration and voting remaining open until February 20.
