Ghana Urges African Union to Confront Xenophobic Attacks in South Africa

The Government of Ghana has formally called on the African Union to address the recurring xenophobic attacks against African migrants in South Africa at its upcoming mid-year coordination meeting scheduled for June 2026.
In a diplomatic communication sent to the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa expressed concern over repeated incidents of violence targeting African nationals living in South Africa. According to the Ghanaian government, the attacks have led to deaths, destruction of businesses and growing insecurity among migrants across the country.
The letter highlighted the historical support many African nations gave South Africa during the anti-apartheid struggle, stating that the continued targeting of fellow Africans is deeply troubling considering the continent’s shared history.
As part of its proposals, Ghana requested the African Union to place the issue officially on the agenda of the Eighth Mid-Year Coordination Meeting expected to hold in El Alamein, Egypt, from June 24 to 27, 2026.
The West African nation also urged the continental body to establish a fact-finding mission to investigate the root causes of xenophobic violence in South Africa and recommend lasting solutions. In addition, Ghana called for stronger monitoring mechanisms to ensure member states comply with the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and other continental commitments.
The government further appealed for dialogue and reconciliation initiatives that would promote tolerance, inclusion and peaceful coexistence among Africans living across the continent.
Referencing the vision of Ghana’s founding leader, Kwame Nkrumah, the statement stressed that Africa’s progress depends on unity and mutual respect among its people, insisting that no African should face discrimination or violence on African soil.
