The government of Ghana has officially introduced a new electronic visa application platform as part of efforts to modernise immigration services and strengthen border security across the country.
The new e-visa system was launched in Accra by President John Dramani Mahama, who described the initiative as a major milestone in Ghana’s digital transformation agenda. He said the platform is expected to improve efficiency in visa processing while making Ghana more accessible to investors, tourists, and business travellers.
According to the president, African passport holders travelling to Ghana for business-related activities will now be required to apply through the online visa platform. The move effectively replaces the previous visa-on-arrival arrangement that had been available to eligible African travellers.
Mahama explained that the initiative aligns with Ghana’s broader commitment to African integration and cross-border collaboration. He noted that the country intends to strengthen ties with Africans on the continent and those living in the diaspora through more seamless travel systems.
The president also stressed that digital migration systems have become increasingly important in today’s global economy, particularly as countries seek to improve security while maintaining openness to international partnerships and commerce.
Speaking during the launch, Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak said the new platform marks a significant shift from manual immigration processes to a technology-driven system capable of improving efficiency and identifying potential security threats before travellers arrive in Ghana.
He stated that the introduction of the digital visa process would enhance Ghana’s border management strategy while supporting the country’s ambitions to become a leading destination for business and tourism in Africa.
Mubarak added that the initiative sends a strong message to the international community that Ghana is prepared to deepen global partnerships, attract more foreign investment, and participate actively in Africa’s growing digital transformation movement.
The Interior Minister also praised the various ministries, immigration authorities, technical teams, and development partners that contributed to the successful implementation of the e-visa platform, describing the project as a product of strong institutional collaboration.
