The French government has applauded the impact of Nigerian alumni who studied in France, highlighting their role in advancing sustainable innovation and national development.
Speaking at the France Alumni Day event held in Lagos, French Ambassador to Nigeria, Jean-François Fonbaustier, revealed that approximately 1,150 Nigerians have completed academic programs in France over the years.
“You’ll be surprised to learn that the total number of Nigerian alumni who studied in France is around 1,150,” Fonbaustier said. “Some returned to Nigeria to contribute locally, while others remained in France under employment contracts.”

He emphasized that many of these graduates are now business founders, social innovators, and thought leaders shaping Nigeria’s future. “We have young Nigerians who studied in France and came back to launch businesses, contribute to national development, and accomplish their destiny,” he added.
One of the highlights of the evening was the recognition of 17 Nigerian alumni for their groundbreaking plastic recycling initiative. The project is aimed at tackling environmental challenges by turning waste into valuable resources a key example of how global education can translate into local impact.
“These alumni are part of a broader initiative to recycle plastic waste turning environmental threats into useful products,” Fonbaustier noted. “It’s a reflection of how knowledge transfer and innovation can thrive across borders. This is a diverse and inclusive network that mirrors the rich cultural tapestry of Nigeria.”
He also pointed to the growing geographic reach of the alumni network, noting a high concentration in Lagos and southern Nigeria, largely due to the availability of jobs and business opportunities. However, the network’s diversity remains a strong point.
“Thanks to the Alliance Française and our partner networks, we remain connected to alumni across the country. Tonight, we have representatives from the North, South, East, and West. The diversity here is something we cherish deeply,” he said.
France Alumni Day is a global event celebrating international graduates of French institutions. It seeks to deepen educational, professional, and cultural ties between France and its partner countries.

This year’s Nigerian edition spotlighted the remarkable contributions of its alumni individuals turning their international education into engines of social, environmental, and economic transformation back home.
