The Federal Government has successfully secured the release of Pastor Benjamin Egbaji, who spent more than two years in detention in the Republic of Benin under reportedly harsh conditions.

The release follows a presidential pardon granted by Benin’s President, Patrice Talon, and was officially published on 17 December 2025. Egbaji, a cleric and businessman from Cross River State, faced multiple charges prior to his detention.

The pastor’s situation drew national attention after images showing him restrained to a hospital bed circulated online, sparking widespread concern. His health had deteriorated while in custody, leading to a transfer from a hospital in Cotonou to prison.

Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, confirmed the development, highlighting months of persistent diplomatic efforts by her office, including a personal hospital visit in August 2025.

Officials described the intervention as a combination of sustained negotiation and public advocacy, which ultimately led to Egbaji regaining his freedom on 8 January 2026.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu emphasized that the case underscores Nigeria’s commitment to protecting its citizens abroad and ensuring their welfare, even in complex legal circumstances.

The pastor is expected to return to Nigeria in the coming days, where authorities and family members have expressed relief at his safe release.

This incident has reignited discussions on the need for robust diplomatic support for Nigerians detained overseas, with calls for continued vigilance in monitoring the welfare of citizens abroad.
