Egypt has experienced a significant rise in financial transfers from its diaspora, with remittances totaling $37.5 billion during the first eleven months of 2025. This represents a 42% increase compared to the same period in 2024, highlighting the growing contribution of Egyptians living abroad to the country’s economy.
November alone saw remittances reach $3.6 billion, marking a 39.9% year-on-year growth. Analysts attribute this surge to a combination of stronger global employment opportunities for Egyptians overseas and improved channels for sending money home, including digital banking and mobile transfer services.
Remittances have become Egypt’s third-largest source of foreign currency, following export revenues and foreign direct investment. In 2024, Egyptian expatriates sent home $29.6 billion, a 51.3% increase from the previous year, signaling a steady upward trend in diaspora contributions over the past few years.
Egypt’s population is estimated at nearly 120 million, with a diaspora community of roughly 14 million people. Most expatriates are concentrated in Gulf oil-producing countries, North America, and Western Europe, regions that provide the bulk of the remittance inflows.
Economists say the rising remittances play a critical role in supporting household incomes, funding education, and stabilizing local markets. The inflows also strengthen Egypt’s foreign currency reserves, providing a buffer against global economic volatility and currency fluctuations
The continued growth of diaspora remittances underscores the importance of overseas Egyptians in the nation’s financial ecosystem. As more citizens abroad send money home, these funds are expected to remain a key contributor to Egypt’s economic resilience and development in the coming years.
