A tragic incident occurred in Eleme, Rivers State, as a Dutch expatriate, Mr. Gibson Reuben, drowned while fleeing from suspected kidnappers. Reuben, the Managing Director of Rivers State Cassava Project Limited, was ambushed by gunmen on January 13, 2025, as he drove along the Aleto Eleme Bridge on the East-West Road.
In an attempt to evade his attackers, his white Toyota Hilux lost control and plunged into the Aleto River. Despite efforts by the Rivers State Police Command, local divers, and the Marine Unit, his lifeless body, along with the submerged vehicle, was recovered the following day.
The Rivers State Police have condemned the attack, describing it as “barbaric,” and have launched an investigation to apprehend the perpetrators. They are calling on residents to provide any information that could aid in their efforts.

This tragic incident raises serious concerns about the safety of expatriates and foreign investors in Rivers State. Mr. Reuben was a key figure in the state's cassava project, a flagship initiative to boost agricultural development. His death is a significant blow to the state’s investment drive, particularly in its agricultural sector.
Authorities are under increasing pressure to address insecurity in the region, as incidents like this threaten to undermine confidence in the state as a safe destination for international collaboration and investment
