Diaspora Star | Tia Adeola: Nigerian Fashion Icon

Teni "Tia" Adeola, a Nigerian-born and London-raised fashion designer, has rapidly emerged as a distinctive voice in the fashion industry, seamlessly blending historical influences with contemporary design.

Born in Nigeria, Adeola spent her formative years in London before relocating to New York City. Her academic journey led her to The New School, where she pursued a Bachelor of Arts in Culture and Media, graduating in May 2019. It was during her time at university that Adeola's passion for fashion design truly flourished.

In 2017, from her dorm room, she launched her brand, initially known as "Slashed by Tia," drawing inspiration from her art history studies and a deep admiration for the Renaissance period. Her mission: to "rewrite history through fashion, particularly for people of colour."

Adeola's designs are renowned for their intricate ruffles and sheer fabrics, reminiscent of Renaissance artistry yet infused with a modern twist. Her unique approach quickly garnered attention, leading to collaborations with high-profile celebrities such as Gigi Hadid, SZA, and Dua Lipa.

In 2020, Adeola made a significant impact with her debut at New York Fashion Week, where she showcased a collection that not only highlighted her design prowess but also her commitment to addressing social issues. Her Fall 2022 collection, for instance, was a poignant commentary on the EndSARS movement in Nigeria, featuring garments emblazoned with statements like "You were supposed to protect us," reflecting her dedication to activism through fashion.

Adeola's work is characterized by a desire to challenge traditional narratives and promote inclusivity within the fashion industry. By drawing from historical aesthetics and reimagining them through a contemporary, diverse lens, she offers a fresh perspective that resonates with a global audience. Her designs not only pay homage to the past but also serve as a platform for cultural commentary and change.

Continuing to expand her brand, Adeola has ventured into menswear and collaborated on various projects, including a luggage line with Away. Her commitment to innovation and inclusivity remains at the forefront of her work, as she seeks to break traditional molds and redefine fashion standards.

Tia Adeola stands as a testament to the power of blending cultural heritage with modern design. Her journey from a university dorm room to international runways underscores her talent, determination, and the growing influence of African designers in the global fashion landscape.
