Princess Opeyemi Bright has emerged as one of the most inspiring figures of the Nigerian diaspora, making history as the youngest mayor in the United Kingdom. At 29, she assumed office as the First Citizen of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham on May 16, 2025, demonstrating the growing global influence of Nigerians in politics.

Born in the UK to Nigerian parents, Bright’s journey reflects a blend of cultural pride and civic ambition. She launched her political career at just 22 when she was elected as a councillor, quickly establishing herself as a champion for youth empowerment, social inclusion, and local economic development. Over seven years, she has consistently advocated for policies that strengthen communities and create opportunities for young people.

Her commitment to public service is deeply rooted in family legacy. Her mother, Dr. Councillor Afolasade Bright, served as Civic Mayor of Hackney, while her father, Pastor Gbolahan Bright MBE, is a respected senior minister in the Redeemed Christian Church of God. This foundation instilled in her a sense of duty, faith, and leadership from an early age.

During her inauguration, Bright highlighted the significance of her Nigerian heritage in shaping her approach to governance. “I’m proud to serve my borough, and as a proud Nigerian, I will represent my heritage with humility and excellence. May this journey inspire others to lead, serve, and rise,” she said, emphasizing the role of diaspora identity in global leadership.

Princess Bright joins a growing cadre of Nigerians making a mark internationally, alongside leaders such as UK Secretary of State Kemi Badenoch, Labour MP Chi Onwurah, Canadian Minister Uzoma Asagwara, and US Congresswoman Esther Agbaje. Her story underscores the diaspora’s expanding political footprint and its ability to influence governance beyond Nigeria.

As mayor, Bright is committed to fostering inclusivity and community cohesion in Barking and Dagenham. She also champions causes close to her heart, including Ab Phab Youth Club, which provides inclusive youth programmes, and Crohn’s & Colitis UK, reflecting her personal journey with Crohn’s disease.

Princess Opeyemi Bright’s rise is a testament to the power of diaspora influence, showing how Nigerian talent abroad continues to redefine leadership, inspire youth, and bridge cultures while serving communities with purpose and distinction.
