Magid Magid’s story is one of extraordinary transformation, from a Somali refugee fleeing civil war to one of Britain’s most outspoken, progressive, and un

apologetically authentic political figures. His life embodies the resilience, creativity, and courage of the African diaspora and reflects how representation can reshape political narratives across continents.

Born in Burao, Somalia, Magid’s early years were marked by instability and displacement. At the age of five, his family fled the Somali Civil War, seeking refuge in the United Kingdom. They settled in Sheffield, a northern industrial city that would become the foundation of his personal and political identity.

Magid often credits Sheffield for shaping his worldview, a city known for its working-class grit, community spirit, and diversity. Growing up in a single-parent household, he navigated the challenges of integration, poverty, and identity, experiences that would later fuel his passion for social justice and equality.

Magid studied Marine Biology at the University of Hull, where his journey into activism began. During his time at the university, he served as President of the Students’ Union, using his leadership platform to campaign on issues of inclusion, education funding, and youth empowerment.

His educational path didn’t end there. He later undertook an MA in Arts and Politics at Goldsmiths, University of London, blending creative thinking with political discourse, a reflection of his multidisciplinary approach to leadership and communication.

In 2016, Magid was elected as a Green Party councillor for Sheffield’s City Ward, marking the start of a political career defined by disruption and authenticity. Two years later, in 2018, he made history as Sheffield’s youngest-ever Lord Mayor at age 28 and the first from the Green Party and of Somali descent.

Unlike traditional politicians, Magid’s time as Lord Mayor was anything but conventional. He swapped stiff formalities for sincerity and boldness, famously wearing Dr. Martens boots and an Afro-inspired mayoral chain, using social media to connect directly with residents.

His decision to publicly “ban” then-U.S. President Donald Trump from Sheffield drew global attention, not just for the act itself, but for what it symbolised: a rejection of intolerance, racism, and divisive politics.

Magid’s mayoralty was a cultural reset for British civic life. He brought humour, inclusivity, and activism into a space often seen as elitist and detached. His leadership style challenged stereotypes about who belongs in politics and what leadership can look like.

In 2019, Magid was elected as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) representing Yorkshire and the Humber. His time in Brussels was marked by advocacy for climate action, refugee rights, and racial justice, issues that reflected both his personal experiences and his party’s progressive values.

Even after the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union, Magid’s impact as an MEP remained significant. He used his platform to challenge xenophobia and environmental neglect, pushing for a vision of Europe that prioritised humanity and sustainability over nationalism.

After leaving formal office, Magid founded Union of Justice, a European, people-of-colour-led organisation that advances racial and climate justice. The organisation operates at the intersection of environment, equity, and human rights amplifying marginalised voices across Europe and demanding accountability from policymakers and institutions.

Through Union of Justice, Magid continues to work internationally, partnering with civil society groups, young activists, and creative thinkers to build more inclusive and sustainable systems.

Magid Magid’s contributions have earned him recognition on the global stage. He was named one of TIME magazine’s 100 rising stars shaping the future of the world, and honoured as One Young World’s Politician of the Year (2019) and a European Young Leader (2019).

His presence on international platforms continues to inspire a new generation of Africans in the diaspora individuals who see activism not merely as resistance, but as leadership rooted in empathy, creativity, and authenticity.

For many in the African diaspora, Magid Magid represents a new kind of power one that rejects conformity and embraces community. His story underscores that leadership is not defined by background, accent, or privilege, but by conviction and courage.

From refugee camps to the European Parliament, Magid’s journey challenges the notion of limitation. It reminds the world that the African voice is not just part of global conversations, it can lead them.

As the founder, activist, and thinker continues to shape discussions on justice and identity, Magid Magid stands as a living example of what happens when diaspora talent meets determination: a redefinition of what it means to belong, lead, and inspire.
