Diaspora Star | Kunle Adeyemi: The Architect Bridging Nigeria and the World

Kunle Adeyemi is a visionary architect whose innovative designs have gained global recognition while remaining deeply rooted in Nigeria’s architectural and cultural heritage. As the founder of NLÉ, an architecture and design practice focused on social and environmental sustainability, Adeyemi has become a bridge between Nigeria and the world, reshaping the conversation around African urbanism and climate-conscious design.

Born and raised in Nigeria, Kunle Adeyemi developed an early passion for architecture, influenced by the rich urban landscapes and structural challenges of African cities. He studied architecture at the University of Lagos before advancing his education at Princeton University in the United States. His career took off when he joined the renowned Dutch architectural firm OMA (Office for Metropolitan Architecture), where he worked closely with influential architect Rem Koolhaas on major global projects.

One of Adeyemi’s most celebrated projects is the Makoko Floating School, a groundbreaking structure designed to address the challenges of flooding in Lagos’ Makoko community. Built on water using sustainable materials, the school provided an innovative solution to urban resilience in a region highly vulnerable to climate change.

The project earned international acclaim, winning the Silver Lion at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2016 and setting a precedent for floating architecture in flood-prone regions worldwide. Though the original structure collapsed due to severe weather, the concept has since evolved into the Makoko Floating System (MFS), which has been adapted for use in other parts of Africa and Asia.

Adeyemi’s work extends far beyond Nigeria. Through NLÉ, he has led projects across Africa, Europe, and Asia, focusing on sustainable, locally inspired solutions to global architectural challenges. Some of his notable projects include:

  • The Chicoco Radio Station (Port Harcourt, Nigeria) – A floating media hub designed to empower local communities.

  • Black Rhino Academy (Tanzania) – A school designed with eco-friendly materials and a strong connection to nature.

  • Lagos Water Communities Project – A continuation of his work in Makoko, exploring how floating buildings can transform waterfront settlements.

Kunle Adeyemi is more than just an architect; he is a thought leader reshaping how African cities are designed for the future. His work challenges the dominance of Western architectural models, proving that sustainable and climate-responsive design can be rooted in local culture and resources.

He has also been a visiting professor at prestigious institutions like Harvard University, where he shares his expertise on urbanism and innovative design for emerging economies.

With each project, Kunle Adeyemi bridges Nigeria and the world, demonstrating that African architects can lead global conversations on sustainability, urbanization, and resilience. His work is a testament to the power of architecture not just as an art form but as a tool for solving pressing social and environmental issues.

As cities face increasing climate challenges, Adeyemi’s vision provides a roadmap for sustainable development in Africa and beyond. His legacy continues to inspire a new generation of architects to embrace innovation while staying true to their cultural roots.
