Growing up in Crenshaw, a community known for both its challenges and cultural vibrance, Akbar’s journey began on the basketball court. At Crenshaw High School, he was part of a championship-winning team before pivoting to football in his senior year , a decision that would change his life. His athletic prowess earned him a scholarship to San Diego State University, where he played for the Aztecs and graduated with a degree in communication and new media studies.

Despite going undrafted in the 2003 NFL Draft, Akbar refused to be sidelined. He signed with the Oakland Raiders and went on to play for the San Diego Chargers and Miami Dolphins. While his professional football career was brief, it laid the foundation for his evolution into one of America’s most recognizable sports commentators and television personalities.

Akbar’s transition from athlete to broadcaster was strategic. Selected for the NFL’s inaugural Broadcast Boot Camp in 2005, he honed his media skills and began hosting Football Night in San Diego. His engaging style and authenticity soon attracted national attention. Today, he is best known as the charismatic co-host of NBC’s American Ninja Warrior, a commentator for NFL Network’s Good Morning Football, and a former co-host of CBS’s The Talk (2021–2024).

Beyond television, Akbar is an author and motivational figure. His 2019 book, Everyone Can Be a Ninja, draws from his life lessons to inspire readers to confront fear, pursue purpose, and overcome adversity. His advocacy extends to philanthropy serving on the boards of the Asomugha Foundation, which promotes education for underprivileged youth, and the Michael J. Fox Foundation, which funds Parkinson’s research, a cause close to his heart following his father’s diagnosis.

Faith and family remain central to Akbar’s life. Raised in a Muslim household, he converted to Christianity during college and has often credited his faith for shaping his worldview. He is married to Chrystal Gbajabiamila, and together they are raising four children in Los Angeles.

Akbar Gbaja-Biamila stands as a powerful symbol of Nigerian excellence abroad a man who turned athletic discipline into media success, transforming setbacks into stepping stones. From the Crenshaw district to the NFL and global television, his story is proof that with vision and perseverance, anyone — indeed, everyone can be a ninja.
