The Lagos Magistrate Court, Yaba, has scheduled April 14, 2026, for the inquest into the death of 21-month-old Nkanu Nnamdi Esege, son of acclaimed author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Dr. Ivara Esege.

The child passed away on January 7, 2026, following medical procedures at Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital, Lagos, after initial treatment at Atlantis Hospital. His parents have raised concerns of medical negligence and professional misconduct.

At Wednesday’s preliminary sitting, Magistrate Atinuke Adetunji instructed all parties to submit witness statements before the adjourned date. She emphasized the need for an autopsy to establish the cause of death.

The family, represented by Professor Kemi Pinheiro (SAN), intends to present evidence alleging overdose, misdiagnosis, and improper administration of sedation. They plan to call five independent medical experts, including anesthesiologists and the child’s father, who is a medical doctor.

Euracare and Atlantis Hospital will also provide their accounts, with Euracare presenting first. The court directed preservation of all physical and electronic evidence, including CCTV footage, patient records, and internal communications.

The Lagos State Government, represented by the Attorney-General, supported the inquest, noting the state also shares in the bereavement.

The hearing aims to determine the exact circumstances surrounding Nkanu’s death, ensuring all relevant medical procedures and hospital practices are thoroughly examined.
