Cross River State is positioning the 2025 Calabar Carnival as its most internationally connected edition yet, following the formal introduction of the Diaspora Band,an initiative aimed at strengthening cultural exchange between Nigeria and its global diaspora. The move comes as the carnival marks its 20th anniversary, a milestone government officials say demands broader global engagement and a renewed cultural vision.

According to organisers, the new band was created to give Nigerians abroad, especially those in the UK, US, Canada, Europe, the Caribbean and Latin America, a structured platform to participate in the carnival beyond tourism. Participants will feature in choreography segments, musical processions, costume design, heritage storytelling and artistic installations that reflect the shared identity and history of people of Nigerian descent worldwide.

Government representatives emphasised that the Diaspora Band is also part of a long-term strategy to reconnect second- and third-generation diaspora citizens who may never have lived in Nigeria but maintain deep ancestral ties. The state is working with diaspora communities, cultural associations and Nigerian embassies to ensure broad participation, including youth groups and professional organisations abroad.

Early registration data indicates a surge of interest from Nigerian creatives, academics, entrepreneurs and entertainers living overseas, many describing the band as an opportunity to re-engage with home while contributing to national cultural diplomacy. Some groups plan to combine their carnival participation with community outreach in Cross River, including arts workshops, charity visits and cultural education programmes.

Tourism authorities say the diaspora-focused expansion is expected to boost international arrivals during the December celebrations, with foreign travel agencies already packaging special heritage-themed carnival tours. Officials believe the global visibility generated by returnees will elevate the carnival’s reputation as Africa’s premier street parade and reinforce Nigeria’s growing influence in the global creative economy.

With the 2025 theme “Traces of Time,” the Diaspora Band will explore shared memory, migration journeys, resilience and cultural continuity, an artistic effort that organisers say underscores the enduring bond between Nigeria and its people across the world.
