Anti-Immigrant Protests in South Africa Spark Fresh Concerns for Nigerians

Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of Durban on Wednesday in a large-scale protest against undocumented migrants, with Nigerians among those specifically targeted in the rhetoric.

The march, organised by a civic group and supported by political figures, amplified calls for stricter immigration enforcement and mass deportations. Some leaders openly criticised the presence of foreign nationals, naming Nigeria among countries contributing to what they described as growing migration pressures.

Speakers at the rally also questioned access to public services by undocumented migrants, particularly healthcare, arguing that such benefits should be restricted. These remarks have drawn criticism for fueling xenophobic sentiments.

Participants cited unemployment and economic hardship as key reasons behind their anger. With South Africa’s jobless rate remaining high, many protesters argued that foreign nationals were competing with locals for limited opportunities.

Tensions escalated during the demonstration when a group of protesters broke away, leading to isolated incidents of harassment and looting. Police intervened to restore order, while several business owners had already shut down operations in anticipation of unrest.

Nigerians, who form one of the most visible migrant communities in South Africa, have historically been frequent targets during such protests. Past outbreaks of xenophobic violence have resulted in casualties, property destruction, and strained diplomatic relations between both countries.

Analysts warn that the resurgence of anti-immigrant rhetoric may be influenced by political interests ahead of upcoming elections, with migrants increasingly used as focal points in public discourse.

For many Nigerians living in major South African cities, the latest developments have renewed fears over safety and long-term stability.
