Ghana has conferred citizenship on popular American YouTuber and streamer IShowSpeed as he concludes a month-long tour across the African continent, marking a symbolic end to his travels.
The announcement was made by Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, who said the decision followed a review of the content creator’s strong cultural connection and public engagement with Ghana during his visit.
The minister described the move as recognition of the influencer’s positive representation of Ghana and Africa to a global audience, adding that the country was proud to formally welcome him as a citizen.
IShowSpeed, whose real name is Darren Jason Watkins Jr., is a 21-year-old content creator from Cincinnati, Ohio. He is among the world’s most-followed digital personalities, having reached over 50 million subscribers on YouTube this month.
His Africa tour, which began in late December, covered about 20 countries.
During the trip, he documented local cultures, food, sports, and everyday life, sharing experiences from destinations including Botswana, Ethiopia, and Morocco.
The tour attracted widespread attention online, with many viewers praising his content for challenging long-standing stereotypes about Africa. Several followers, particularly from the African diaspora, said his videos reshaped their perception of the continent.
Ghana’s decision to grant him citizenship has sparked conversations about cultural diplomacy and the growing influence of digital creators in shaping global narratives about Africa.
