The British High Commission in Nigeria has announced plans to consult with the Nigerian government regarding the United Kingdom’s recently proposed immigration reforms. The engagement will begin once the UK finalizes the implementation details of the new policy framework.

This follows the UK government's release of a White Paper on Monday, which outlines significant changes to the immigration system. Key proposals include the discontinuation of the social care visa route, a reduction in the duration of graduate visas, a longer path to permanent residency, and the introduction of compulsory English language tests for dependants.
While the UK government has yet to confirm a specific timeline for enforcement, the High Commission emphasized the importance of its relationship with Nigeria.

“The UK enjoys strong, long-standing people-to-people links with Nigeria. We are proud that the UK remains a top destination for Nigerians seeking to work, study, visit, and settle, and we value the contributions they make to the UK,” a spokesperson said in a statement.
According to the British High Commission, the policy overhaul is intended to restore "order, control, and fairness" in the immigration process, reduce net migration, and support economic development.
Officials stressed that the reforms would be introduced gradually and in consultation with key international partners like Nigeria.
The statement comes amid speculation that the UK may begin limiting visa access to nationals from countries with high rates of visa overstays Nigeria reportedly among them.
Despite these concerns, the British High Commission reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining “strong and enduring” bilateral ties. It described the UK as a globally engaged nation that continues to welcome diversity and international talent.
