Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, was on Sunday honoured with the prestigious chieftaincy title of Yeye Asiwaju Gbogbo Ile Oodua by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, during a colourful and historic ceremony held in Ile-Ife, Osun State.

The First Lady arrived at the Ooni’s palace around 1 PM to a warm reception marked by cultural displays, heightened security presence, and the gathering of palace chiefs who welcomed her ahead of the installation ceremony at the Palace Square.

The conferment coincided with celebrations marking the Ooni’s 10th coronation anniversary, drawing a distinguished assembly of monarchs and dignitaries from across Yorubaland, including the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III; the Sultan of Sokoto; and the Soun of Ogbomosho, among other traditional rulers.

The title Yeye Asiwaju Gbogbo Ile Oodua carries deep historical and cultural weight, having been previously held by the late Chief (Mrs) Hannah Idowu Dideolu Awolowo, wife of the revered statesman Chief Obafemi Awolowo. It is conferred on women whose leadership, influence, and service have contributed significantly to the progress of the Yoruba race.

Senator Tinubu’s installation further strengthens her growing profile within Nigeria’s traditional institutions, adding to a series of titles she has received in recognition of her humanitarian work, advocacy for women and children, and commitment to national development.

“I am deeply honoured by this title, and I receive it with humility and a renewed commitment to continue serving our people and preserving the rich heritage of the Yoruba nation,” she said during the ceremony.
“This recognition is not just for me but for every woman across Nigeria who continues to contribute to nation-building. I will continue to champion unity, culture, and progress across all communities,” she added.

This latest honour follows other traditional titles conferred on her across the country this year. In August 2025, she was named Iya Oba of Ikorodu by Oba Kabir Shotobi of Lagos State. Earlier in June, the Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council awarded her the title Ugosimba I of Enugu for her humanitarian initiatives, while in October she was bestowed the title Sarauniyar Yaki (Queen Warrior) by the Lamido of Akko in Gombe State, recognising her efforts to protect vulnerable groups nationwide.
