Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has declared that he is qualified to lead Nigeria, as discussions and speculations continue to trail his possible presidential ambition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Makinde made the declaration during a media parley with select journalists in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Tuesday, where he reflected on his political journey, leadership experience, and views on national governance.
The governor said his experience as the chief executive of Oyo State has given him a deep understanding of governance, policy implementation, and public accountability, noting that leadership at the state level provides a strong foundation for national leadership.
He explained that by the end of his tenure in May 2027, he would have completed a full two-term administration as governor, a record he said compares favourably with that of other leaders who have previously sought or attained the presidency.

Makinde also drew attention to his professional background, stating that his early exposure to private sector management and multinational work environments shaped his leadership style and prepared him for complex responsibilities.
“Let me make this very clear: to serve this country at the highest level, I am qualified — I’m even overqualified. By the end of May 2027, by God’s grace and God sparing my life, I will have completed the full tenure as a two-term governor of Oyo State,” he said.
“Professionally, I ran a company from a very young age and worked with multinational oil companies such as Shell, ExxonMobil, and Chevron, without relying on government patronage. People can go out there and verify my track record,” Makinde added.
While affirming his qualifications, the governor said it was still too early to make a definitive declaration about the 2027 presidential race, stressing the need for strong opposition parties and a healthy democracy, while criticising political defections that, according to him, have failed to address the hunger and anger currently being experienced by Nigerians.
