The official flag-off ceremony was held at the Lagos House in Ikeja, where Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by Deputy Governor Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, commended the Dangote Foundation for its commitment to addressing food insecurity in Nigeria.
“We commend what the Aliko Dangote Foundation is doing. This is a call to action for other individuals, organizations, and stakeholders to contribute to the development and well-being of our people,” the Governor said. “Charity begins with each one of us no matter how small, every act of giving makes a difference.”
Governor Sanwo-Olu also emphasized that the distribution of the rice would be coordinated through Chairmen of Council Development Areas (CDAs) and Community Development Committees (CDCs), noting that these grassroots structures have the reach and knowledge needed to ensure the food gets to those who need it most.

He further highlighted other state-led initiatives aimed at mitigating economic hardship, including the Farmers’ Subsidy Programme which provides subsidized farm inputs, feeds, and fisheries to support local agricultural production.
Speaking at the event, Mariya Aliko Dangote, Trustee of the Aliko Dangote Foundation and CEO of Dangote Group, said the initiative underscores the foundation’s long-standing commitment to fighting hunger in Nigeria.
“This campaign is both a response to immediate needs and a step toward sustainable food access. Our goal is to distribute one million 10kg bags of rice across the 774 local government areas nationwide,” she stated.
She added that the timing of the initiative coinciding with both Ramadan and Lent reflects the importance of compassion, empathy, and generosity, especially in supporting those in need during this spiritual season.
Also speaking at the ceremony, Zouera Youssoufou, Managing Director and CEO of the Aliko Dangote Foundation, reiterated the foundation’s tradition of distributing food during Ramadan through its annual Zakat programme.
“This year, with Lent and Ramadan overlapping, our efforts are even more impactful. We are distributing one million bags of rice to support communities across all 774 LGAs in Nigeria,” she said.
The National Food Intervention Programme is expected to bring significant relief to many households and reinforce public-private collaboration in addressing social welfare challenges
