Members of the Kenyan diaspora in Ethiopia have donated essential maternal and newborn care supplies to Pumwani Maternity Hospital in Nairobi, providing relief for vulnerable mothers and strengthening frontline maternal health services.

The donation was led by Kenya’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, George M. Orina, alongside Kenyan community members based in Addis Ababa. The initiative targeted low-income women who depend on the public hospital for safe delivery and postnatal care.

Coordinated by the Kenya Wananchi Association in Ethiopia, the items donated included baby packs, nappies, nutritional supplements, baby clothing and other basic necessities required after childbirth.

Hospital officials described the gesture as timely, noting that Pumwani serves thousands of mothers each year, including underage girls and refugees who often lack essential supplies during delivery.

Receiving the donation, the Head of the Medical Social Work Department, Pascalin Kimongu, said the support would help restore dignity and hope to mothers who arrive at the facility with little or nothing.

She added that beyond material support, the department offers psychosocial care, emotional support, livelihood training and links to education to help mothers and their children build sustainable futures.

Ambassador Orina said diaspora engagement plays a critical role in complementing government efforts in healthcare delivery, while hospital management welcomed continued collaboration to improve maternal and child health outcomes.
