The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) have reaffirmed their shared commitment to advancing safe, orderly, and regular migration, while also deepening strategic engagement with Nigerians living abroad.
During a courtesy visit to NiDCOM headquarters in Abuja, IOM’s newly appointed Chief of Mission to Nigeria, Dimanche Sharon, praised Nigeria’s efforts in managing migration and diaspora relations, describing the country’s approach as a continental model.
“Effectively managed migration can significantly drive sustainable development,” Sharon said. She highlighted the economic impact of the Nigerian diaspora, noting that in 2022, Nigeria received $20.1 billion in remittances accounting for 38% of all remittances to Sub-Saharan Africa.

Sharon emphasized IOM’s willingness to strengthen collaboration with NiDCOM in support of Nigeria’s migration governance and diaspora engagement strategies. She acknowledged previous joint efforts in assisting the voluntary return and reintegration of Nigerians stranded abroad during crises.
In response, NiDCOM Chairperson Abike Dabiri-Erewa welcomed the renewed cooperation, outlining key focus areas for joint action. These include updating Nigeria’s Diaspora Policy, enhancing capacity through training and exchange programmes, launching joint campaigns on the dangers of irregular migration, and bolstering the work of the Standing Committee on Diaspora Matters.
Dabiri-Erewa stressed that migration must be viewed as a development issue, not just a humanitarian one. She expressed confidence that the strengthened partnership would yield tangible benefits for both migrants and the broader Nigerian society.
This development marks a continued alignment between IOM and NiDCOM in addressing migration challenges and unlocking the potential of Nigeria’s global diaspora community.
