Bandits Attack Police Station in Ondo Community, Residents Flee

Panic gripped Ipele-Owo in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State on Wednesday night as armed bandits launched a violent attack on the local police station. The assault occurred while residents were preparing for New Year church services, heightening fear across the community.

Eyewitnesses reported that about 20 assailants stormed the area around 10 PM, firing indiscriminately and creating chaos. Many residents reportedly fled into nearby bushes to escape the gunfire.

According to one terrified resident, who asked not to be named, “The attackers came in a commando style. They fired randomly and targeted the police station. Everyone ran for safety. It was one of the scariest nights of my life.”

The bandits allegedly set parts of the police station on fire before escaping, leaving the community in shock. Several homes near the station were also abandoned as people sought refuge elsewhere.

The Ondo State Police Command confirmed the incident but stated that full details were still being compiled. Security operatives have been deployed to the area to restore order and prevent further attacks.

This attack comes at a time when the Nigeria Police Force has recently recorded major successes against armed gangs. In December 2025, operatives of the Force Intelligence Department and Kwara State Police arrested two suspected bandits linked to violent crimes in multiple states.

Items seized from the suspects included an AK-47 rifle, cash believed to be unspent ransom, and a motorcycle allegedly used in criminal activities. The arrests were described by authorities as a significant breakthrough in combating organized banditry.

Residents have been urged to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities to security agencies, and cooperate with law enforcement as investigations into the Ondo attack continue.
