In a bold call to action for the African diaspora, Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has urged African governments to adopt strategies used by Asian and Arab communities in engaging their diasporas, highlighting their cultural unity and economic cooperation as models for sustainable development.
Speaking through Otunba Soji Adewusi at the Cultural Hangout Festival in London at an event marking Africa Day the Governor emphasized the urgent need for a structured diaspora policy in Nigeria that promotes cultural retention and home-based linkages. According to Adeleke, the fragmented and individualistic approach currently common among African diaspora communities is stifling collective progress.

“The Asians, Arabs, and Indians maintain strong cultural and economic ties to their roots. Their coordinated support systems and cohesive cultural identity give them a competitive edge globally. Africans must take a cue from this,” he stated.
The Governor criticized the lack of diplomatic infrastructure dedicated to empowering African diaspora populations, contrasting it with the targeted outreach and support provided by Asian diplomatic missions. He advocated a complete overhaul of Nigeria’s diaspora engagement, suggesting that African consulates should function not just as administrative outposts, but as hubs for economic diplomacy, cultural exchange, and community development.
“Our diplomatic services must prioritize diaspora outreach. They should serve as economic and cultural bridges, not just political liaisons,” Adeleke emphasized.
The lecture, attended by cultural leaders and dignitaries from across the continent, coincided with Adeleke’s recent recognition as “Most Impactful Governor of the Year in Infrastructure” by City People. While receiving the award (through Commissioner Kolapo Alimi), Adeleke reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to infrastructural development across Osun State, citing investments in transportation, education, health, and digital economy.
In linking diaspora affairs with infrastructure development at home, Governor Adeleke positions Osun as both a national model for domestic transformation and a potential leader in Africa's broader diaspora strategy.
