In a display of regional solidarity and commitment to democratic principles, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has extended his heartfelt congratulations to Ghana’s President-elect, John Dramani Mahama, following Mahama’s victory in Ghana’s December 7 general election. The call came after the concession speech of Mahama’s main opponent, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
During the telephone call, President Tinubu expressed his hopes that Mahama’s return to power would bolster stability within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), where Tinubu serves as chairman. Tinubu commended Ghanaian voters for their peaceful and transparent electoral process, underscoring their dedication to democracy as a pathway to political stability and economic development in Africa.
President Tinubu praised Dr. Bawumia for conceding defeat even before the official announcement of the results by Ghana’s Electoral Commission, highlighting this act as a testament to Ghana’s strong democratic ethos.
Reflecting on Mahama’s political journey, Tinubu noted that his re-election, having previously served as President from 2012 to 2017, demonstrated the Ghanaian people’s confidence in his leadership and vision. Mahama’s political career spans decades, including terms as Vice President, Member of Parliament, and ministerial roles.
Tinubu also acknowledged the contributions of outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo, thanking him for his leadership and efforts toward Ghana’s progress and regional peace.
The Nigerian leader reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening ties between Nigeria and Ghana, emphasizing shared history, cultural bonds, and mutual aspirations for Pan-African unity, economic integration, and sustainable development. Tinubu expressed his readiness to work closely with Mahama’s administration to foster cooperation across multiple sectors and enhance the prosperity of the West African region.
