Three Nigerian nationals who were stranded at a South African airport have finally been cleared to depart following swift diplomatic intervention by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM). The travellers are expected to arrive in Lagos tomorrow morning.

NiDCOM expressed relief at their release but raised concerns about the circumstances that led to the incident. According to the commission, one of the individuals had previously shared critical remarks about the South African government online, which attracted heightened scrutiny at immigration.

The agency explained that when confronted by immigration officials, the traveller was unable to provide adequate clarification regarding his online posts, which further complicated the situation. This highlighted the importance of being cautious about one’s digital footprint when travelling internationally.

NiDCOM also identified the over-reliance on unregulated visa agents as a common risk factor. These agents often collect passport information and complete visa applications without the full knowledge or approval of the traveller, sometimes leading to inconsistencies during immigration interviews.

The commission advised all Nigerian travellers to apply for visas directly or through licensed and verifiable agents. Ensuring that every detail submitted is accurate and defensible during immigration interviews can help prevent unnecessary delays or denial of entry.

NiDCOM further stressed that travellers should have genuine, well-documented reasons for visiting other countries and carry all supporting evidence. The commission warned that derogatory or inflammatory posts online could trigger secondary screening or visa denial.

The incident came to public attention when one of the stranded Nigerians shared a plea on social media, describing how he and others were singled out despite valid visas and complete documentation. NiDCOM used this case to underscore the importance of responsible travel preparation.

In conclusion, NiDCOM thanked the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa for its prompt action and reiterated its commitment to protecting Nigerians abroad. The agency urged citizens planning international travel to exercise caution, noting that thorough preparation safeguards both individuals and the country’s reputation.
