British authorities have charged a teenage suspect with murder following the fatal stabbing of a Nigerian national, John Onetufo, in the Lewisham area of south London on New Year’s Eve, marking a major development in the ongoing investigation.
Onetufo, 23, was found critically injured with stab wounds to his chest after police received an emergency call from Grove Street late on December 31. Emergency medical teams arrived promptly and attempted to save his life, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident sparked an intensive investigation by the Metropolitan Police, with detectives moving quickly to secure the area, collect evidence, and trace those believed to be involved in the attack. Officers described the case as a priority due to the violent nature of the crime.
In an official update, police confirmed that a 17-year-old boy has now been formally charged with murder. The suspect’s identity has not been made public because of his age. He is expected to appear before the Bromley Magistrates’ Youth Court.
Investigators stressed that the charge represents a significant step forward but does not bring the inquiry to a close. Detectives are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the stabbing, including events leading up to the confrontation.
Two other individuals arrested during the investigation have been released on bail pending further inquiries. A 23-year-old man was detained on suspicion of murder, while an 18-year-old woman was arrested over alleged actions linked to obstructing the investigation.
Police said both suspects remain under active investigation and could face further action depending on the outcome of ongoing enquiries. Authorities have not ruled out additional arrests.
Law enforcement officials reiterated their commitment to holding those responsible accountable and have appealed to members of the public with relevant information to assist the investigation as they work to deliver justice for the victim and his family.
