TCN Seeks Lagos' Support to Protect Vital Power Corridors

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has formally reached out to the Lagos State Government to request a stronger partnership in safeguarding power infrastructure. During a courtesy visit to the Lagos State Planning and Environmental Monitoring Authority (LASPEMA), TCN officials highlighted the dangers of urban encroachment on transmission lines.

General Manager (Transmission) for the Lagos Region, Mojeed Akintola, explained that rapid population growth has led to uncontrolled developments under high-tension wires. This encroachment not only threatens the reliability of the electricity grid but also poses a severe electrocution risk to the people living or working within these corridors.

According to a statement from TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, the visit was aimed at aligning the company’s technical needs with the state’s urban planning goals. TCN believes that closer inter-agency cooperation is the only way to prevent the illegal structures that often lead to equipment damage and frequent grid disturbances.

The TCN management emphasized that when transmission rights-of-way are violated, it becomes difficult to perform essential maintenance on the lines. This leads to a ripple effect that negatively impacts the electricity supply to homes, businesses, and industries across Lagos, hindering the state's economic productivity.

By strengthening ties with LASPEMA, TCN hopes to ensure that future urban expansion respects the boundaries of critical national infrastructure. Both parties expressed a commitment to promoting orderly development that prioritizes public safety while ensuring a stable and efficient power supply for the residents of Lagos.
