NiMET Issues 3-Day Alert: Dust Haze,Thunderstorms Expected Nationwide


The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) has issued a weather forecast indicating the likelihood of dust haze and thunderstorms from Monday to Wednesday across the nation.


In its Weather Outlook report, NiMET predicts various weather conditions in different regions of Nigeria.

- Monday: Dust haze with a visibility range of 1km to 3km and localised visibility of less than or equal to 1,000m is anticipated over the northern region. Thunderstorms are also expected later in the day, particularly in parts of Taraba state.


- North Central States: Visibility values are expected to range between 2km to 5km due to suspended dust, with thunderstorms predicted in various regions, including the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, Niger, Kogi, Kwara, Plateau, and Benue states during the afternoon and evening.


- Southern States: Thunderstorms are expected during the morning hours in parts of Enugu, Anambra, Abia, Ondo, Ogun, Osun, Cross River, Rivers, Lagos, Delta, and Akwa Ibom states.


NiMet anticipates moderate dust haze on Wednesday with a visibility range of 2km to 5km over the North. It also predicts thunderstorms in various regions during the afternoon and evening.


The agency advises the public to take necessary precautions as heavy rainfall can lead to flash floods. It also warns of strong winds accompanying thunderstorms and urges disaster risk managers, agencies, and individuals to be proactive during the rainy season.


Additionally, NiMET advises airline operators to regularly check weather reports and alerts to plan their operations effectively.
