The Federal Government of Nigeria has entered into two strategic agreements with international healthcare companies, Siemens Healthineers (via its Nigerian partner, Tanit Medical Engineering) and Abbott Laboratories GmbH, to enhance healthcare access and capacity in the country.
The Ministry of Health and Social Welfare announced the partnerships on Sunday through a statement by Mr. Alaba Balogun, Deputy Director of Information and Public Relations. The agreements, formalized under the Presidential Initiative for Unlocking the Healthcare Value Chain (PVAC), signify a major push for public-private partnerships aimed at improving healthcare delivery.
Key objectives include the local assembly of ultrasound systems, advanced medical training for Nigerian professionals, and expanded access to high-quality diagnostic solutions produced within the country. These measures are expected to reduce dependence on imports and bolster the self-sufficiency of Nigeria's healthcare system.
Speaking at the signing, PVAC National Coordinator Dr. Abdu Mukhtar emphasized that the initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to unlocking Nigeria’s healthcare potential. Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Pate, praised the move, underscoring its importance in attracting investment into the sector under the incentives provided by Executive Order.
Global partners also expressed their dedication to the initiative. Siemens Healthineers’ Dr. Kevin Massoudi highlighted Nigeria's leadership in health innovation in Africa, while Dr. Rabah El Menshawy of Abbott Laboratories reaffirmed their commitment to producing top-tier diagnostics locally and supporting Nigeria's goal of ending HIV infections by 2030.
This collaboration is a significant milestone in the country’s quest to provide equitable and efficient healthcare for its population.
